Nostalgia, My Only Friend

Lyrics

(chorus)

I try to remember
But it seems that I don’t know myself these days
And it seems every November
When the leaves fall I begin to change

I change x2

(verse 1)

The air grows cold
My story’s getting old
As I walk down familiar roads
Reaping what I’ve sown

(chorus)

And I try to remember
But it seems that I don’t know myself these days
And it seems every November
When the leaves fall I begin to change

I change x2

(verse 2)

Looking for a sign
Something to remind me I’m alive
I’m under attack
Packs of wolves at my back

(chorus)

And I try to remember
But it seems that I don’t know myself these days
And it seems every November
When the leaves fall I begin to change

I change x2

(bridge)

And I feel the days I knew aren’t quite as true
Now I know, what’s real
’cause everything now is echoing loud that
One of these days I’ll run to you, and I’ll say it
One of these days I’ll run to you, and I’ll say it

Open, let’s open the doors of misery so
Open, I’ll open the doors of misery x2

Tonight…

(chorus)

And I try to remember
But it seems that I don’t know myself these days…

Story

Nostalgia, My Only Friend” is mostly summed up in the title. The song is about the ever-changing state of things and arriving to a place and time where the remnants of the past seemed much more fulfilling and meaningful than anything being experienced presently. It explores the idea of changing from a younger version of yourself to someone older and losing the identity you thought you had. The song talks about the autumn season and how that has always been a particularly nostalgic time of year for me. It seems to always herald significant changes that often times have had a dramatic effect on my life. This track carries on to describe the struggle of keeping up with change and being pushed forward while the past nips at your heels often times, landing a bite that slows down your progress forward. The bridge of this song divulges into what happens when nostalgia is entertained for too long. Having your head stuck in the past makes it impossible to move forward and all the while life passes you by in the present. It hurts your emotions, your relationships and brings nothing but misery – longing for a time that once existed but never will again.
